I love the ambience of this place. It's casual and slightly eclectic and comfortable. There are nice couches around the place for people to sit back and chill or tables and chairs for those that want to be serious and focused on their food or study ;-))
I stumbled across this place and whilst I did not stay for long loved it. I would happily come back here again. I felt too old for the place when I dropped in as it was full of students on laptops but that won't stop me from going there ;-))Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 6 jan 2013
Obviously University Ave is a busy and loud street but this place is a pretty relaxing venue. I went there around breakfast time. I ordered a single-brew coffee (El Salvador Blend) and a breakfast croissant (bacon, egg and cheese). Both were tasty.
There was a good of seating and space between, including some couches.
There was a flat screen tv and the staffperson let us drive the remote so we could watch college football.

They have a decent draft beer selection and when I checked in there was a nice discount on draft beers. Too bad it was around 10am when I was there so I didn't participate in the beer special, perhaps next time.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 3 jun 2013
It took me a while to write this review since I'm a coffee noob. That said, as a newer coffee drinker, they were really helpful in describing the differences between their slow drip coffees. The cup I got was smooth and bold in flavor, just how I like it. No milk or sugar please, this cup is complete by itself. And they have the lowest prices I know of for such high quality coffee.
I also love the atmosphere here. Great place to chill and do work. A little too chill since the Wi-Fi gets overloaded by people who buy one cup of coffee and camp out for 8 hours.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 7 mrt 2015Bijgewerkte review
Let me upgrade, ya!
After the recent upgrades at Cafe Yesterday, I can't get enough. Now roasting their own coffee and with a revamped menu, this previous butt-her face is the total package. Amazing coffee, delicious food, and now with air-conditioning (or at least some sort of new cooling system). Oh, technology!
I've been wanting to write this review for the past couple months, but my final motivation came with today's events, which showcased the kindness and fantastic customer service of the new staff, especially the ridiculously generous owner.
I've been eating Cafe Yesterday's breakfast sandwich (plus avocado and a side of mustard) at least 4 days a week for about a few weeks now, making me a regular. Every so often I will get a ridiculously rich and oh so nutty soy mocha, which definitely gives other cafes a run for their money.
Yesterday, I ordered my sandwich online like I normally do. After the typical 15-minute wait, I went downstairs to pick it up. I even received a text confirmation 5-10 minutes prior that they were making the sandwich. When I went downstairs, I found out there was a computer glitch and no sandwich was being made. I had to run for an appointment and came back the next day (today) to ask if I could still get the sandwich. The staff were incredibly sweet, and the owner even threw in a free soy mocha!
I love businesses like Cafe Yesterday who care about their regulars. Stop by, and let's make Cafe Yesterday the new East Bay destination spot it deserves to be!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 024 aug 2013Vorige reviewTotal but-her face.
The food and other offerings at Cafe Yesterday are absolutely terrific. The Schulz sandwich is actually one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. However, I'm not a fan of the cafe space itself. Yes, I like the free wi-fi, but I'm not sold on the idea of televisions in a cafe. Plus, I don't understand how people can stay in the cafe for more than 10 minutes; it's hot and stuffy with bad lighting. It also closes at a ridiculously early time.
I live in Campanile Court, the building that houses the cafe. For the past two mornings I've tried to call to make a food order, but the cafe never picks up. This means one of two things: (1) staff is unresponsive or (2) the only working phone is in the manager's office, which is always empty. It's strange not being about to pre-order food from a cafe; even stranger is the cafe ignoring my phone call. What if I had been their coffee distributor or landlord?
I also have three personal grips with them. First of all, service is very slow. I had brunch with some neighbors last week, and they delivered our food one at a time. By the time I got my meal, everyone else was done with their own.
Secondly, a counter server sassed me. He claimed my friend ordered to go, and assumed I did, too. I don't think my friend did because we had been planning to eat there and then. When my meal was finally ready, they didn't even call my name; they just left it sitting on the counter. I ordered oatmeal, and I couldn't even distinguish it because it was placed in a disposable coffee cup with lid and all. When I asked the counter server why it was packaged that way, he gave me a bit of an attitude and didn't act anywhere close to sympathetic. (Sorry if me wanting to eat gets in the way of you doing your job correctly!) I was in customer service for 3 years; if I ever talked to a customer like the way he talked to me, I'd probably get the evil eye from my boss.
And lastly, they never have juice. The first time I went to Cafe Yesterday, I was in a rush and grabbed an orange juice to go. It was one of those unpleasant Dole juices with all the preservatives. I wanted to grab juice almost everyday this week, and they've been "sold out." What's the deal? Mi Tierra Foods, the grocery store less than a block away, has extremely affordable freshly made juices, coffee, and sandwiches! The store even offers student discounts. If Mi Tierra Foods had tables, I would eat there everyday. What does it say when a Mexican grocery store competes with a proper cafe?
CONCLUSION
My recommendation is always order to-go. Why eat or study in a cafe that isn't fitting for either? It's a shame that this place has such wonderful food, but the establishment itself lacks in the very important particulars; in other words, what a but-her face. - Louisa B.Boston, Verenigde Staten6058928127 jul 2015
My friends and I stopped in on our way out of Berkeley to get some breakfast for the road. I ordered the veggie bagel which has cream cheese, tomato and cucumber on an everything bagel. It was good! A different style of everything than I was used to be come to think of it they're always a little different. Got an iced coffee as well.
I ordered my friends the fully loaded - one on a croissant which it normally comes on and one in a tortilla. The fully loaded has everything you could imagine - eggs, bacon, cheese, avocado, tomatoes... I think that's it? They loved their sandwiches and I also got them two large lattes which they said were exceptional.
I would probably return if I lived in the area. Big seating area with couches, bar stools and tables. Free wifi- although I couldn't seem to connect, but it is definitely free and open! Very friendly staff who are working hard to get everyone's drinks and food out. There were only 2 this morning when I went in and it still didn't take too long!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Katherine D.Washington, DC, Verenigde Staten48242153 mei 2015
This is my spot. Coffee is awesome. Food is simple and delicious. Barristas are super cool and awesomely friendly. Ambiance is laid back, clean, open, and easy to find a seat. I hesitate to even write this for fear of it all of a sudden being overrun, but they deserve the hype. Seriously though, discovering this place resulted in an immediate increase in my weekly spending on coffee and a substantial rise in my croissant & egg consumption.
Pro Tips:
(1) You can order what you want online in advance, then they'll text you when it's ready - if you're into such modern conveniences.
(2) Get the breakfast sandwich.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 7 jul 2014

The barista with the beard has mad milk-steaming skills. I swear to god, you get a big clump of foam on your spoon and you'll think you're eating Marshmallow Fluff! It is JUST THAT DENSE.
Well done, sir.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 04 okt 2011Vorige reviewI have mixed feelings about this place.
What I look for in a comfy Sunday coffee shop experience: mellow music (Ray LaMontagne and Ryan Adams are good), solid coffee, warm atmosphere and serious chow. Wi-fi is a plus (their wi-fi is very spotty though).
The baked goods get a thumbs down (Yes, they are from Costco, the cashier confirmed it) and the coffee is okay but not mind-blowing.
But it's friendly and a nice place to visit and now I've been there twice.
The second time I visited the music was AWFUL, blaring hideousness. C'mon guys what's that about??
Maybe next time I'll try the sandwiches or cereal. - 1081151141723 jul 2014
Wonderful!
Verve coffee prepared by experts who really care about the drinks that they serve. I ordered a 12-ounce pour over that was made with a Honduras coffee. The barista used 24 grams of coffee and a V60 dripper. The resulting drink was very strong and perfectly delicious.
Cafe Yesterday has serviceable WiFi and lots of space. There are plugs for your devices and two restrooms. The men's room is large enough to accommodate two people; most places like this have single occupancy restrooms (to go with the single origin coffees).
Now for the bad: There's not much in a way of decor -- Local 123 and the Alchemy Collective Cafe both have a cooler look and feel. Also, in warm weather you'll probably be breathing in a fair amount of exhaust from the traffic on University. The generic feel of the place will probably bother some. Personally, I'm 100% fine with it.
Cafe Yesterday is really mellow. There's a lot less attitude than you'll find around the corner. I can see myself coming here a lot, maybe even for the occasional cocktail hour. (When I checked in on Yelp, I got a $4 draft beer offer!)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 173374623813 sep 2013
Cool cafe!! The place has a retro vibe reminiscent of the 60's & 70's. I liked all the vintage furnishings, decor, and most of all, the music! Very fun & relaxing setting. Also, it's awesome that there's free wifi.
I'm a huge fan of lattes and the iced cafe latte I ordered here was EXCELLENT. However, it took the barista about 25 minutes to get it out to me! There were only 2 people ahead of me and neither of them ordered coffee. There was another worker behind the counter too, so I really don't know what the hold up was. Anyway, I REALLY enjoyed my latte....I savored every sip. So refreshing and goood! The workers here are really cool & friendly, though. When I finally received my drink, they did offer a sincere apology for the long wait.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
